Kybella: The Jiggle is Real

So here is a super long diary review of my kybella experience. I have always had a small patch of fat under my chin, even when I was young and very thin. Last year, I went to a med spa for kybella or coolscultping and was instead pushed into ultherapy which was a massive waste of time and money. I have a review on that too. So after losing 20 pounds, my chin got better but it wasn’t back to where I was happy and I was starting to notice jowels forming. At this point I was resolved to do chin lipo, kybella, or something/anything. I went to several consultations before decided to go with Dr. Colony. He took time evaluating the structure of my face and where he would inject in order to get the results I was hoping for and he and his staff were also super nice and I felt like they really listened to me. He said I should only need one treatment of two vials because I didn’t have that much fat in the area.

The Procedure - Day 0
I had read so many reviews beforehand and worked myself up expecting extreme pain like a ton of tetanus shots to the face. The nurse who took me back and set me up with ice was wonderful. She had the procedure herself about a month before and had really useful advice and calmed me down a lot. I iced my face for awhile and then the doctor came in and marked my face for the injections, then I went back to icing for several more minutes. He came back for the injections and worked very quickly; I would say it was over in 5 or 6 minutes. From what I could feel, he seemed to do a great job evenly distributing the two vials between my chin and the two sides of my jawline/jowels. After he finished, I continued icing and that’s when the pain and burning slowly creeped in. The nurse helped me put on my headgear and I drove home immediately.

The pain lasted around 3 hours and afterwards was mostly sore. I would describe it initially as 50 tiny Mike Tysons punched my chin and jaw. Then it felt like 50 Mike Tyson bees stung me and it burned for awhile. After those first 3 hours things became much more manageable. Keep icing and wear the compression garment! Also, stock your house with soup because you will not want to chew anything.

Day 1
The next morning I had a bit more swelling and my neck was sore like I had been lifting weights and straining my neck. I didn't have trouble swallowing, but it felt sore when I did. My biggest mistake so far was not grocery shopping before the procedure! I had to go out in public with my jiggly jowels to get soup, yogurt, and other soft foods. Basically expect to recover with foods you would eat after getting your wisdom teeth removed. Seriously, the jiggle is real! It feels so bizarre. It’s like all of the swelling in your face is mashed up jello going nuts in there. So weird.

After the first 30 hours I started to get more range in motion back. I had resolved to eat only healthy, anti-inflammability foods during recovery, but I broke down and went to Taco Bell the second day. So unfortunately I can’t give any feedback on that. Sometimes you just need to run for the border.

Day 2
More improvements this morning in terms of my neck pain. I’m using arnica gel and I’m supposed to start gentle massaging today. My chin area is completely numb, while I’m still a bit tender in the neck. I’m still quite swollen but nothing terrible.

Day 3
Feeling even better today. No more pain and only minor discomfort in the jaw. Still puffy of course, but not as bad as I had anticipated. This is the last day I have to wear the compression head gear all day and I’ll switch to just overnight for the next week.

One Week After
Swelling has subsided a lot, but still pretty puffy, tender, and numb. I don’t think other people notice the swelling, but of course I do. I’m massaging the chin, jaw, and neck as instructed. I don’t find it terribly helpful, but I’m keeping it up.

Two Weeks
I’m more or less back to baseline, finally! Still numb in the chin, but hardly any tenderness left. There is a weird tightness in my chin when I look up, which a lot of others have written about too.

Six Weeks
Starting to see results! Chin is still numb, which is super weird, but I've gotten used to it. I had my follow up appointment and Dr. Colony reminded me to keep massaging, which I had bailed on recently.

Nine Weeks
Holy crap, the results on the left side of my face are amazing! Of course this was my "good side" before, but I'm so happy that now it's my awesome side! Unfortunately the right side "bad side" isn't as dramatic, but I do see subtle improvements. I know this is something that will continue to work it's magic over the coming weeks, so I'll post updates if I notice more changes. I'll probably go in for another vial and focus on my right side the next time I have $700 laying around.
