I have always hated my breasts, I've been through many relationships and sexual experiences without ever showing them to my partner. It took being with my husband almost 2 years to finally get enough confidence up to show him. I am 30 now with 3 kids, I have been married for 12 years and my husband still only gets to see my breasts on special occasions. That being said, I never knew what was wrong with them until within the last year I came across the word tubular breasts. After quite a bit of research I decided to talk with my doctor to see what she had to say. She agreed with me but needed a medical diagnosis from a plastic surgeon in order to start the process of getting them fixed. I've been to 3 different surgeons and back to my doctor 4 times now and have talked to an insurance representative for tricare (as I am a military spouse). 2 out of 3 of those plastic surgeons have agreed that I'll need to have two separate procedures spaced about 12 weeks apart. One for a lift and one for the implants to get the desired look that I would like to be proportionate to my body. Within 2 months of this process starting the insurance representative has agreed that there should be no reason why tricare would deny me since I've been medically diagnosed with a Congenial abnormality. Today she told me the policy number to give the doctor and has submitted it to the insurance to get approved. Fingers crossed they agree with her and let me go ahead with the procedure.

Welcome, and thanks so much for sharing your story with us. I hope you'll enjoy being a part of this amazing community. Please keep us updated once you've heard from your insurance! Have you told your friends and family about your plans? How did they react?

So far all of my friends and family have been super supportive. My mom (who had hers done a few years ago) is supportive but also cautious. Moms always worry about anything their kid does no matter how old they are

That's very true! My kids are all adults but they still worry me silly at times :) I'm glad you have a good support network! Are you feeling more nervous or excited right now?

32yr Old Mother of 3 with Tuberous Breasts

After a long battle and a lot of fine detail reading of my TRICARE insurance policy, they approved to cover me 100% for my breast reconstruction. It is a breast suspension, trimmed the size of my areolas and inserted my breast tissue expanders and filled them with 100cc. I have been going in every 2 weeks to get 60cc added. I started off barley a size B. If they made a 38A that would have been my size. I am a pant size 12/14 with a big booty, wide hips, broad shoulders and my breast have never fit my body right. They have always made me feel extremely insecure and uncomfortable with every aspect of my life. They became painful after my 3rd child, I wasn't able to breast feed my babies long at all after they were born. I never had enough mammary glands to make enough milk to feed them.

My plastic surgeon said he had never seen any insurance cover a congenial abnormality correction so he was very pleasantly surprised to see that mine did. I had a referral letter from him, one from my PCM and I wrote my own accounting on why it was deemed a medically necessary procedure.
The expanders and surgery was painful but nothing too extreme. It felt more like someone (like the hulk) had punched me very hard in the center of my chest. My chest bone, or the muscles connected to it, hurt the worst. They were very tight and made it a little difficult to breathe. My areolas were only 1in from my chest wall so it is going to take a while to get my muscles stretched out. It has been a month and I just tried on a normal bra and I am now a full B. I am going for a full D. I will keep updated on my progress but they definitely have a difference already. The expanders make my breasts very hard and unnatural feeling. It is temporary which is a relief.
When I go for my fills it starts off the first few days all stuck up above my normal breast until the muscle gradually stretches and the saline descends. Every fill just makes me feel like I'm wearing a tight bra and not much pain. The worst is when the needle is inserted though my skin into the expander. They have to push the needle in the full depth to push through and that hurts worse than anything. The needle is a bigger gage and I refer to it as a straw even though that's an exaggeration.
My lift restriction is down to 10lbs and my range of reach is limited. Which makes it difficult to care for my 3 kids but I know I have wanted this for 17 years and it will be worth it in the end. For the most part my major limit on reach is behind me, I am a month out and still sleeping elevated because of the too stretched feeling I get when I reach up while lying down. And also there is no exercising that is allowed for quite a while after surgery. No running, no fast paced arm movements, no weigh lifting, not even a leg press because it flattens out your back and stretches the muscles too much. I am going a little stir crazy from the limits I have but it will be over soon enough. I will try and post in the next few weeks for updates.
The cost is 10,000 total with it being 5,000/ per surgery and needing 2 surgeries. One to fill and correct areola size, fills and the 2nd will be to replace the expander with the implant.

3 weeks post op

After my expanders were filled to 620cc I had to call it. They were very rock hard and uncomfortable and started to stretch under my arms. I reached 40D cup which was my goal. They fit very nicely but I still had a shelf like bottom to my breast. I knew that was the tissue expander so I tried not to be discouraged.
On April 6th I went in for my implant surgery. I was a little sore afterwards but nothing like the first one when they placed the expanders in. They are beautiful and I could not be happier. He fit in 615cc silicone implants and they fit my body type so much better. My areolas has stretched a little since my initial surgery in December but I am glad he did a reduction then because they would be the size of bologna slices by now if he didn't. He also said he's glad he waited to do a lift with the switch surgery (expanders out implants in) if he had done a lift he could not have gotten that extra 100cc in. I have a large frame so that extra 100 did help. He released a few muscles underneath so that they would round out. I'm only 3 weeks out so they have not settled in yet 100% but they are already amazing. We will go back and think about a lift once they settle into place which should be between 6-12 months.
