Provider Review
I had a terrible experience and outcome with Dr. Peter Hilger. I had a nice looking nose but my nostrils were collapsing from a rhinoplasty done when I was a teenager. He was recommended by an ENT department at a clinic in my city. I ended up seeing him at a different clinic a few months later. He was to take out only cartilage from the back of my ear to rebuild my nostrils and nothing else. This was the plan during my consultation with him. It was even in my patient notes that I asked to only change my nose slightly. My nose was only suppose to look slightly wider. He also told my insurance that he was not doing cosmetic surgery. He decided that he did not like how my nose looked and took out a lot of cartilage from the front of my nose. He wrote in my progress notes that I was grateful that he made my nose look more refined. I never said anything about disliking how my nose looked or that it was okay for him to do more than was agreed upon. Today I still cannot breath adequately through my nose and my tiny nose looks deformed in photos. I am missing symmetry and one side is higher and has less of a nostril then the other side. I did send a letter and photos to the Medical Licensing Board in Minnesota but it came back in his favor. Minnesota's Medical Licensing Board is the worst in the country for reprimanding doctors for not following appropriate standards. (Star Tribune has done articles on this issue.) Out of 50 states including Delaware Minnesota is the worst for patient rights. I never gave medical consent to have my nose shortened or to have cosmetic surgery. When I talked with him about it a few months after my surgery he tried to blame me for the poor outcome. I was very swollen and did not realize how much cartilage was taken out of my nose until over a year later. I regret that I did not get a second or third opinion and find a doctor whose height of fame was not in the 1980's with better communication skills and a basic respect for the patient. I would have never had the surgery if I had knew how my nose was going to turn out. Today I avoid being in photos and it has hurt my self-esteem. He gave me a tiny deformed little nose when I came in to have more cartilage in my nostrils.
