I’ve recently had ~2000 FUE grafts implanted in my crown area by Dr Edward Maitland Ball and his team at the Maitland Clinic in Hampshire, UK. It was such a positive experience that I’m pleased to offer this review.

I recently turned 60 years of age and I’ve been losing my hair for the past 15 years or so. It started to go around the crown region but in recent years my hairline has also been receding and the hair at the front thinning. I had been circling the idea of a hair transplant for a number of years but turning 60 seems to have been the trigger for me to take the plunge.

I actually had two consultations with Dr Ball, separated by a period of a year. Essentially it took me that time to fully digest the options presented to me in the first consultation. I weighed up the pros and cons of long-hair versus short-hair FUE, the impact on my daily life of an unusually short hairstyle, whether keeping it a secret from workmates was a priority, the financial cost, and, ultimately as far as I was concerned, whether I trusted the surgeon to do a good job. I would be walking around with it for the rest of my life so I couldn‘t afford any disasters. For me it took a year before all of those pieces of the jigsaw fitted into place. In the end I opted for short-hair FUE - right down to the wood though slightly longer on top.

A characteristic of Dr Ball’s approach is that he doesn’t promise miracles, instead he gives you an honest, realistic appraisal of what you can hope to achieve. He also gives you his undivided time and attention in contrast to some other clinics where the first time you might meet your surgeon is on the day of the procedure itself. On top of everything else Dr Ball is a personable chap; friendly, a good listener, and open to your point of view.

Rather than give a blow by blow account of the procedure, I’d rather focus on a few general points:

Firstly, I was struck by how well organised the whole procedure was. Absolutely everything was catered for, from my lunch preferences through to detailed aftercare instructions with all the necessary meds provided. The process has obviously been refined over many cycles and the team has it down to a fine art.
The team is led by Dr Ball but is four/five strong in total. Janna, Clinic Director, plays a key role but everyone else has an important part to play too. They were like a well-oiled machine as they went about their business fulfilling their individual roles, meticulously, patiently, and with dogged perseverance. Very much a team effort albeit under Dr Ball‘s watchful eye. A word of praise too for David, the Senior Patient Adviser, who was my initial point of contact and acted as my interface with the medical team.
Everyone was genuinely friendly and caring about my welfare. We shared quite a few laughs and I was even allowed control of the TV remote (there was a wide selection of the latest films to choose from)! It was actually an enjoyable experience and I would even go so far as to say it was one of the most memorable days of my life.
As to the financial side of things, flexibility and value for money sum up my experience of the Maitland. The team’s paramount concern was to do the best restoration job possible and indeed I think they went over and above the call (e.g. in terms of numbers of grafts and length of shift). There was no sense that I was just another paying customer, instead quality of the restoration was the top priority.

I won’t know how effective my procedure has been for a few months yet but I’m already certain that in opting for the Maitland Clinic I’ve given myself the best chance of a successful outcome. If I still have donor capacity left I’ll be back for more.
