part 2

I took a week off work and flew to AZ and met with Dr. Laris. He agreed that my neck did not look as planned. He was agreeable to talk with and wants you to understand what he recommends and why. His solution was to liposuction my neck and add filler to create a jaw line. He did not charge for the liposuction and agreed it should have been done the first time. He showed me how the top of my neck would be tighter if he pulled the skin back, but ultimately did not think that was the right solution. The liposuction helped a lot and my neck looks better but not tightened. The procedure was simple and I could have flown home the next day.

I still have a turtleneck of baggy skin. I really wish he had pulled the skin tighter as he had shown. It doesn’t lay quit right. After 2 visits, my neck is improved but not what I was hoping for. I still look like I could benefit from a neck lift. I know the general advice is to go back to your initial surgeon for a solution, but I already did that. The idea of trying to get ahold of his office and them actually responding and coming up with a solution seems impossible. Plus, I have to take more time off work for any procedure or visit.

My mini lift incisions are healing up well. I don’t look like I had anything “done”. I felt that Dr. Laris had a pleasant bedside manner, explained everything well, and set realistic expectations. Ultimately I would not recommend this doctor for this procedure if your neck is of primary concern.

I would recommend Dr. Laris for a blepharoplasty. I am very happy with mine.

I would not recommend this office if you do not live in the area. The Dr. does not speak to patients over the phone or answer emails, only his surgical assistants do that, and they do not want to be helpful.
His office was terrible to work with. I was given inaccurate information, ignored, and treated as inconvenience, which is why I knocked off a star in my rating.

mini face lift

I felt like my neck was older than the rest of my face. A good friend of mine recommended Dr. Laris to me. I live in a smaller town in a different state with less plastic surgery options. I coordinated my surgery with the doctor's surgical assistant. I clearly expressed my concerns and priorities and she recommended the mini face lift. (I also got a blepharoplasty which I am happy with, separate review) I had read that some mini-lifts don't address the neck and she assured me that theirs did, they make it as tight as they can while still being able to turn my neck. In addition, the mini lift tightens the jaw line. The pictures on his website of mini lift showed nice looking necks with big improvement. The office was not easy to coordinate with but I thought that was just a fluke.
I flew to AZ for surgery. On the day of, I consulted with Dr. Laris before hand. He said this surgery was not specifically for the neck, (what???) but that I would see an improvement. Ooookkkay that is NOT what they had said in multiple phone conversations. But I had flown down and had already taken 2 weeks off of work for this and it still sounded good, so we proceeded. I was very clear that a tight neck was my priority.

The surgery went well, not uncomfortable at all. The next 18 hours after surgery were hell.
I went back to the office the next morning for a check up. I went back again a week later to have my stitches removed, then flew home.

There was so much swelling. I wanted to reserve judgement before assessing my results. My ear looked displaced and off for weeks, I was sure something went wrong. It looks good now. My neck did not look good.

Around week 5, I yawned and didn't catch it to suppress it. I heard and felt a loud snapping noise and stabbing pain. A tendon was sticking out right at the incision line by the jaw. I tried gently massaging it, which was a huge mistake. I emailed my surgical coordinator for advice. I couldn't chew or talk clearly and it was very painful.
The surgical coordinator did not get back to me. I emailed again. I left a voice message. And another. And another. Still no reply. This was a real low point. I didn't look or feel good. It was depressing to be in pain, not see surgical results, and to have zero help or support. I talked to a nurse friend who recommended treatment of icing, ibuprofen, and try to find a doctor locally not could give me a steroid shot in the tendon.
After a week of unanswered messages to my calls for help, I did get an email reply of "it's probably swelling." Unhelpful.

Normally at 6 weeks you have a follow up appointment with the Dr. As I had not talked to the Dr. or his assistant since surgery (this is not the type of office that will be checking in on you), I was eager for this follow-up because I had a lot of concerns. Mainly that my neck looked bulging. I tried to make that appointment. It can only be done through a surgical assistant. When I couldn't get ahold of them about the painful tendon, I thought they must have had an off week, maybe someone was sick or a family emergency. But trying to get a follow up appointment was even worse. I left so many messages and emails, always trying to keep my voice upbeat! And positive! Least I come across as a difficult patient. (who just wanted a follow up) At one point I called the main line front desk just to make sure they were still in business. They were but also couldn't help me. I found this embarrassing and I felt like an idiot.

After over a week of no replies, I called the front desk again and the receptionist waited out in the hall for a surgical assistant to walk by so she could thrust my call onto her. It got the ball rolling. Dr. Laris refuses any video or phone consultations, even with follow up surgery, so he would look at the photos I sent and then talk to the assistant and then she would relay the message to me. This made me nervous as she had not given me accurate information in the past and generally had the attitude of being way too busy to keep up with or care about patient problems. After a lot of phone calls and messages, it was agreed that I would fly back to Arizona. Dr. Laris would access the problem and if he agreed it needed to be fixed, he would fix it that day.
This was all extremely stressful. At no point did I feel like the office cared about my concerns or results. It was me pushing to be seen. Again, this felt embarrassing and low to me. I relative of mine encouraged me to stand up or myself, but it wasn't easy.
After all the run-around, my partner insisted that I get in writing that if follow up surgery was needed, Dr.Laris would perform it at the same time when I flew back. As if.
