DES and Ptosis Correction at Marble

I’m currently 2 weeks post-op from my incisional DES and ptosis correction at Marble with Dr. Suh. I’m still quite swollen, so only time will tell how my eyelids will ultimately settle.

Online Consultation:
Marble was very responsive and provided an online quote quickly. The entire process was smooth and efficient.

In-Person Consultation:
My English interpreter, Hee Kyung, was fantastic! I never felt rushed during my consultation. Dr. Suh took his time to thoroughly address all of my questions and concerns. Because of my eye asymmetry (one eye protrudes slightly more), he was honest in letting me know that achieving perfect symmetry wouldn’t be possible. Another clinic had recommended epicanthoplasty, but Dr. Suh disagreed and didn’t try to upsell me on any unnecessary procedures. I appreciated his transparency and professionalism.

I was informed that I’d be sedated for the first three minutes of the procedure, but awake for the rest. They were also upfront about the ptosis correction potentially being painful, since the eyelids needed to stay functional for Dr. Suh to assess movement during surgery. Due to scheduling constraints, I ended up having the procedure the same day as my consultation.

Surgery:
I was given extremely light sedation—thankfully, I didn’t feel the initial numbing injections. As someone else on Reddit described it, “it was the sensation of pressure, pulling and kneading and seeing my life flash before my eyes in this weird kaleidoscope imagery that caught me off guard.” That description was dead accurate. I really had to focus on my breathing to stay calm and avoid panicking. I do wish I was given a little more sedation in the beginning. Maybe I should had spoken up but I was pretty terrified to speak or move. Just as I was told, the ptosis correction did get painful at times. At first, it felt like accidentally plucking my eyelid instead of an eyebrow, then that sensation lingered. I completely understand why I had to be awake and not fully numbed—Dr. Suh was incredibly meticulous (!!) and had me open and close my eyes probably 50 times. The entire surgery took about two hours.

Things I wish I had:
- Background music would had been nice. I needed something to focus on besides my breathing and the beeping of my heart rate on the monitor.
- My OR suite door was kept opened. If you don’t speak Korean, the loud conversations through the walls and hallway might sound quit alarming, but there’s no emergency—it’s just how we talk.

Recovery:
After surgery, I was given an ice pack for about 20 minutes. I thought I’d be able to walk around the city afterwards, but that wasn’t the case for me. My eyes felt tight and swollen—more uncomfortable than painful. My vision was also blurry, even with glasses, but that cleared up within an hour or two. I had pretty intense swelling and black/blue/red brushing for the two weeks I was in Korea. I wish I could hide from life for another two weeks for the swelling to further decrease. Lol
