Chin Implant-great Experience, but Still Numb

I had been thinking about getting a chin implant since 2011, and I finally went for it on June 27, 2018. I have been meaning to write a review on this site for months now, as I relied on other peoples' reviews to make my decision. Life got in the way and I kept forgetting to post a review, but I would like to share my experience.
As far as the surgery itself, the experience was so much easier than I expected! I decided to have a consultation with Dr. Darrick Antell in Manhattan based on his reviews. After meeting Dr. Antell, I booked the procedure that day. He is not only very talented in what he does, but he has a really great bedside manner. As I work in health care, I have come across many providers that do not have good etiquette. Dr. Antell was kind, patient, and thorough. He answered every question I had and I was immediately comfortable with him. I didn't feel like he was "selling" me on anything. I explained to him that I had been thinking about it for years, that it was not an easy decision for me to make, and he just made me feel more confident in my decision to have the surgery. Not only is Dr. Antell an incredible surgeon, but his entire staff is just incredible. I don't normally take the time to write reviews, but I really felt I owed it to Dr. Antell and his staff! From the receptionists to the nurse to the procedure coordinator, everyone was so kind and helpful. His nurse Emerald was fantastic! On the morning of my procedure, I had to wait longer than anticipated because of the prior procedure taking longer (again, I work in health care and completely understand that the schedule can get thrown off-that wasn't a big deal to me). However, sitting there waiting, I became really nervous and second guessing my decision. I told Emerald I was having second thoughts because I was nervous and she stayed in the room with me just to talk and calm me down. Then after the procedure, while I was still a little groggy, one of the receptionists (I really wish I could remember, but I think her name was Julianne), sat with me until I drank a little bit and was ready to leave. Also, I had some increased swelling a few days after the procedure, which was right around Fourth of July, and I emailed Emerald, Dr. Antell's nurse, asking about steroids for the swelling. Emerald emailed me back very quickly, while she was on a personal vacation (!!!!), and told me that she would let Dr. Antell know. Then I got a call shortly afterwards from Dr. Antell that he was sending a prescription to my pharmacy for steroids. I was just so impressed by their attentiveness and willingness to respond and help! It's so obvious that they truly care about their patients. On top of all of this, I actually had to cancel my procedure very shortly before it was scheduled because of an illness of a family member. Not only were they fine with me cancelling, when I realized I could have the procedure the following week, they easily scheduled me in to make it work. I honestly cannot say enough good things about Dr. Antell and his office. I would 100% recommend this practice to anyone and would definitely go back here in the future for anything else I might want done. I really believe that bedside manner and just the environment of a facility is a huge part in creating a good medical experience, and Dr. Antell and his staff truly went above and beyond! Now, to talk about the actual procedure...it was so much easier than I had expected. I took a train from Long Island to Manhattan that morning, then went home with a friend just a few hours later. My bandage was changed before I left the office, and I actually ended up having to change it two more times that night. I didn't want to touch it, but the dressing was saturated with blood, so I did change it to keep it clean. I went back into the city the next t that point it was just closed with steri strips (like butterfly stitches to keep the incision closed). I have to say that the pain was so much less than I expected. All I took for pain the first 2 days was Tylenol, and then I didn't need anything. There was no pain at all. It was just annoying because my chin and my bottom lip were extremely numb. At that point it was hard to smile, talk, or eat. It wasn't uncomfortable to chew, but it was tricky to open up my mouth to eat...I only had what I could slide in with a spoon. It felt as if the bottom half of my face was tremendous, but it wasn't. It just felt that way because of the numbness. After a couple of days, the swelling and bruising decreased and really was minimal. Then a couple days later, on day 5 after the procedure, I woke up with a lot of swelling and bruising in my chin/jowl area. I think it was because I was out talking/laughing/eating a lot the night before, but Dr. Antell prescribed me steroids and it started to improve after a day. I tried really hard to sleep on my back, propped up on pillows or using an airplane neck pillow, but I kept waking up being on my side, so that may have had something to do with the swelling as well. I was able to go out in public in just a couple of days and no one noticed anything. I have a scar underneath my chin from the incision, but it's not noticeable to anyone but me. When the incision was still fresh and had steri strips, I just told people I cut my chin on the edge of a pool. As for the results, I'm pretty happy with them. Sometimes I do wish the implant was a little bit bigger so I would have more projection. I still feel like I have a double chin sometimes, but it is definitely more defined from the side than before, especially when I smile. The only issue that I still have with the chin implant is the numbness. It is significant better than in the beginning...my smile is completely normal, and I talk and eat without a problem, but sometimes I can't tell if something is dripping down my chin. Or if I have something cold or hot, I feel like it is dripping down my chin, but it's really not. When I touch my chin and bottom lip, more so on the right side, it is still slightly numb. It's not such a huge issue and no one else would ever be able to tell anything was wrong, but it's definitely an annoying sensation. It almost feels as if the inside of my bottom lip is swollen, but it's not. Also, when I get a little piece of food stuck between my bottom lip and teeth, I get a very sharp shooting pain and I know that something is there. I am already 8 months post procedure, so I'm really not sure if this sensation will fade, but I'm still hoping that maybe the nerves just haven't fully healed yet. Other than the lingering numbness, there's not a single negative thing to report. It was such an easy procedure and I regret not doing it sooner. I am very happy with the results, but sometimes I do wish my chin was a little more projected, especially considering I'm still having weird sensations 8 months later. I would recommend the procedure, but beware you may have some abnormal feeling for quite a while. That being said, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Antell for any cosmetic procedure!
