Wonderful Experience During a Very Difficult Time! I Hope my Sharing Will Help You.
Life is a wonderful journey, and in this wonderful journey we are bombarded with many choices and decisions, some insignificant and some very significant. So it was for my husband and I over these past few weeks, we had some very significant and possibly life altering decisions to make. Diagnosed with breast cancer in July of 2018 and given all the test results, my plan would be a bilateral Mastectomy. This very significant and difficult decision would lead to several other decisions and choices in the coming weeks, and one being, who might I choose to perform my reconstruction surgery, should I decide to go this route.
My Breast Surgeon gave me some highly qualified and highly recommended surgeons that I might want to meet, ask questions and learn more about my options for possible reconstruction. I am sharing with you because I know first hand that this is a very fearful, uncertain and overwhelming time. If sharing my experience about Dr. Showalter and his staff can give you some information that might help make this extremely difficult decision that you are facing, somewhat less challenging, I am so very grateful to help.
Prior to my husband and I walking into Dr. Showalter's office, I was very anxious, and I remember talking with my husband and praying, "Lord, If the doctor, takes his time speaking with me, listens to me, answers my questions and makes me feel important" then I will know this is who You would want to do my surgery. Likewise, my husband prayed, unbeknownst to me, if this is who the Lord desires for my wife's surgeon, he will be able to do the surgery on the earliest date given to us by my breast surgeon.
From the moment we entered Dr. Showalter's office we felt comfortable, we were greeted by the front office with a smile and genuine concern, we barely had time to sit down and were called to come back to see the doctor. The nurse was equally kind and compassionate. I had my long list of questions and concerns, prepared to ask them all. Dr. Showalter arrived shortly after, and he, my husband and I talked for a very long time, I would say at least 45 mins to an hour about my options, about all my questions and concerns and my husband's as well. After this I was examined and Dr. Showalter talked with us and answered more questions, even some I had probably already asked, we never felt rushed. My prayer had been answered, and then Dr. Showalter offered to move his schedule around to do my surgery on the first available date that my surgeon had given us, we had been told by our breast surgeon's office that Dr. Showalter could only do the surgery on a date in September, this was confirmation for my husband. I did not make my decision that day, Dr. Showalter understood this decision was very important to me, he did not rush me to make the choice, but my time was limited as the surgery date was quickly approaching in a little over a week. He gave us his email and cell phone to contact him with any questions or concerns that we may have thought of later.
In a couple of days I emailed Dr. Showalter that I would like him to be my surgeon and he again offered genuine care and concern to help us through this time.
My surgery has gone extremely well, Dr. Showalter's professionalism, his surgical ability, his attention to detail, care and concern, has continue through the surgery into the post-op period and during all my follow up appointments thus far. My husband and I are very pleased with the outcome of my surgery and we are forever grateful to Dr. Showalter and his wonderful staff and the continued exceptional care we know we will receive in the months to follow.
My husband and I want you know as well the care we have received at Martha Jefferson Hospital has been exceptional, from the MRI, to the lab, to the patient access staff, to the volunteer staff, to the support staff, to the greeters and valet parking staff, the Oncology staff, Genetic Counselor and last but not least the amazing nurses, techs, and support staff in the OR and on the inpatient units, you will be treated with the greatest of care.
I pray sharing some of my journey will be helpful for you, and that it might help to ease your burden somewhat during your difficult time.
Blessings and Thank you to all,
J and B
