Great Staff and Great Results (Microlaser Peel, BBL, Profractional)
Shalene went above and beyond with my profractional, microlaser peel (MLP), and BBL. I've had BBLs and MLPs at other places, but the results were minimal in the past. The combo Shalene did for me was amazing!! Huge reduction in sun damage and redness. The profractional is a game changer because it has coagulation, which actually tightens. I've seen an actual change in my pore size, especially on my cheeks.
Day 0 (day of):
Shalene first did a BBL pass to remove sun damage and redness, and then a light 15 micron/40% overlap MLP to take off the top layer of skin. This would increase the depth of the profractional, so that it can reach deeper. Then, we did a profractional at 80 microns deep, level 1 coagulation. I'd say each laser had a different type of pain (lol). I had numbing cream, but also took a painkiller a few hours beforehand.
The BBL feels like hot rubber bands, and the MLP feels like.. I don't know how to explain it.. like instant hot sensation, along with the smell of burning hair from any peach fuzz. The profractional is a similar feeling to the MLP, but you can actually feel the laser rotating and hitting a different section of your skin. When it's rotating, it's sending a ton of laser heat "channels" down in to the skin.. it's so weird!! I got body shakes towards the end of the session, because that's just how my body reacts to pain. It happened to me when I had previous BBLs, so I expected it.. it was great that Shalene was used to it and worked it lol. She went over so many spots with so much detail, all the way up to my lashes under my eyes, especially because I have sun damage/"freckles" along this area that most techs don't even bother to address.
I got to hang back in the office for as long as I needed to, while using this cool air hose from the laser machine to cool my face off. She gave me Stratogel and Alastin healing balm to take home. I had pinpoint bleeding and the swelling begins... They say you can wash your face before bed if you want, but most people wait until the next morning, which is what I did.
Day 1 (24 hrs post)
I slept sitting up all night. Trust me - it's uncomfortable, but it WILL help!! I slathered my face with the balm and put a towel under my face, because my face was still bleeding/oozing and the balm kept sliding off because I was sitting up all night.
In the past, I gave up in the middle of the night and slept flat, and you swell up MUCH worse. Either way though, the swelling in unavoidable. I woke this time to pretty swollen undereyes and jaw, and a super red face. All the pinpoint bleeding turned into little dark bloody scabs/globs that were super gooey. I must have "pinpoint" bled a LOT overnight.
When I washed my face, some of the scabs came off easily with just water, but I left the ones that really stuck. There was still pain, but it was no longer a sunburn feeling. It was more like a deep throbbing type of pain. I took tylenol, as I read that ibuprofen isn't preferred.
Day 2 (48 hours post)
The scabbing came off more easily. I really wish I had kept dabbing when the bleeding was fresh because once these suckers adhere to your skin, you really can't be too aggressive, because you don't want to hurt your skin trying to wash them off. This was the grossest part, and once these black blobs washed off, I was at least just one consistent color of "burning red". Swelling under the eyes is less terrible, but the jaws/side of face were more swollen.
Day 3 (72 hours post)
Lots of people say the swelling gets worse here, but by Day 3, my swelling was much better. The biggest issue is the fight against the tight/dry feeling! You're not supposed to let the skin dry out, which seems like an impossible task. The balm was so thick on my face, the weight of it was causing it to slide down my face. I eventually just washed it off and used the Stratogel during the daytime, since it's thin and at least creates a protective moisture barrier for healing. I used the Alastin balm at night when I could handle more layers on my face.
Day 4
Swelling is almost entirely gone! The peeling has begun! It's SO hard to not get carried away when washing your face to see how much skin you can get a'peelin'. I'm super pale, so thankfully I've not had issues with hyperpigmentation, but I've heard that it's VERY important to be gentle with the peeling, because if you rush it and peel too soon, the skin will be raw and could heal a different color than your natural skintone. I just kept using the Stratogel during the day, and the Stratogel/balm at night. I'm super pink today.
Day 5
Peeling galore! Pink is a little less pink. Especially the areas that swelled a lot, because I think the expanding/contracting of the areas causes the skin to come off quicker. Swelling was entirely gone.
Day 6
Peeling is almost entirely done. My PORES on my cheeks looks amazing! Almost like I have a blurring/primer cream on. My skin is a "cute" pink blush color. I wanted to put makeup on, but I didn't want to introduce anything to my skin that wasn't healthy for it, so I braved it in public with my pink face.
Day 7
Alastin Nectar and a super light layer Dr. Jart BB cream. My skin tone is BEAUTIFUL, but it's pink, so it's hard to come to terms with covering it up. Also, now it's a different kind of peeling. Like a 2nd stage of peeling, that super light and makes you look almost like you have super dry skin. The Alastin nectar feels like BUTTER and melted into my skin. At night, I washed my face, applied the nectrar, and then in the morning, I didn't even wash my face, and just applied another layer of nectar. This stuff really doesn't clog pores, so I wasn't worried about skipping a face wash. For the next few days, it's all about staying moisturized!!!
Day 10 - 14
This is when the pink is really all but gone. I wake up and look in the mirror and don't instantly feel like I need to put makeup on. Honestly, at this point, some mornings I don't. It's really more of a strange habit that makes me want to. I've been using the Alastin nectar at night, the Alastin restorative in the morning over my cheeks and t-zone, and the SkinMedica HA5 everywhere else. These are my 3 favourite things in the world now (oh, and my boyfriend.)
For makeup, if I wear any, I've been using Tarte BB cream and Dr. Jart BB cream (I mix them to color match/highlight/contour). I really go light with this stuff, because I almost feel guilty putting anything on that I'm not 0% aware of the ingredients. Both Tarte and Dr. Jart market their makeup for being "good" for the skin, but I STILL feel like I shouldn't use it unless it's my Alastin/SkinMedica... the struggle is real.
All in all, I CANNOT get over the fact that every morning, I look in the mirror, and I'm like, "Wow, I woke up looking like this?!" My complexion is so much better!
Since I have a lot of time off from work soon, I'm scheduling another profractional in a few weeks, just for the cheek area, because I have the very beginnings of malar bags/fastoons on the upper cheeks (thanks, genetics!). The profractional with coagulation is supposed to tighten and is recommended in a ton of articles online to combat fastoons, since they are no where as bad as some that require surgery.
