Can my orthodontist file down the glue on a permanent retainer on the back of the top four front teeth?

I just got my braces off today. My orthodontist put a fixed (permanent) retainer on the back of my four front top teeth. Everytime I go to bite down or chew my bottom teeth hit the glue and I can't bite down all the way nor can I chew.
