Can Veneers Be Taken off to Do an Ortho and Have Braces Put-on on my Natural Teeth? (photo)

Question

I had porcelain veneers put on for a cosmetic smile enhancement. I was wondering if they can be taken-off to do an ortho and have braces put-on to adjust the alignment of my teeth. I am really worried that i might have had committed a mistake on damaging my healthy teeth. Please help!

Hi Juan..Your upper teeth look very straight. You seem to have no problem with the upper arch and your veneers. The lower arch has misaligned canines on both sides. I would not attempt to use ortho after you have already placed veneers. Your veneers could be damaged. There is not enough of the tooth left after you remove the veneers to do ortho. Once veneers always veneers! However, you CAN just have ortho treatment on the lower arch and correct the canines and your smile will straighten it self out along with your teeth! Good luck and consult more than one orthodontist!

Hi there
	It is not impossible but hard to maintain good bond of braces to porcelain. Also, it is difficult to judge how much of the natural tooth structure was removed to place these veneers. But it is certainly not a unique problem and we deal with this often. It would be best to perhaps leave the veneers or modify them to suit the shape you desire and then Invisalign can be used to move the teeth to the ideal position since that can grab the whole tooth and move it without having to damage the veneer and not have to worry about the braces not staying stuck the whole time.

	I respect the other opinion of the cosmetic dentist, Dr. Koutsoukos that upper teeth look straight. However It is not just about straight teeth but a bite to match and so I feel that  the upper teeth will most certainly have to be moved
