Vein surgery during a menstrual cycle okay?

I am scheduled to have phlebectomy vein surgery in 4 days to my groin area and upper thigh / knees, it will be during the beginning of my menstrual cycle. My concern is that this is when my veins are most congested... will this cause any problems or make it riskier for blood clots? Should I re-schedule?

In general, endovenous procedures (ablation) and phlebectomy may be safely performed during the menstrual cycle.  Due to the location of your veins and the fact that you notice that they are more congested during your cycle, it may not be a bad idea to hold off on your procedure until after your cycle ends.  No matter when you have your phlebectomy, be sure to follow your physician's instructions regarding wearing your compression stockings after your procedure.

The only time we don't do vein procedures is during pregnancy for obvious reasons. During menses, there is a surge of hormones which exacerbate symptoms as the body holds on to more water and the hormones irritate the inside lining of the veins (endothelium) and can worsen venous insufficiency. In experienced hands, vein procedures (EVLT, VNUS Closure, ClariVein), microphlebectomy and sclerotherapy is very low risk.

It is perfectly safe to have a vein procedure during the beginning of your menstrual cycle. There is no increased risk of forming blood clots or increased risk of bleeding. You may have increased pelvic vein congestion but not of the veins in your legs.
