I stopped my Invisalign treatment. Can the root change its shape and length on its own?

Hi doctors, The X ray on the left was taken in 2012-09 when I was still in invisalign treatment. The one on the right was taken in 2014-08. I stopped my invisalign treatment since 2014-01 due to a gum surgery. No retention whatsoever since then. My teeth have been shifting slowly. If I’m not mistaken both X rays show the same teeth. It looks like the tip of the roots have become an irregular shape and shorter. Can that happen? Thanks

I would like to see an x-ray from January 2014 to see if there is any root shortening/root blunting from Jan 2014 to Aug 2014.  One of the side effects from orthodontic treatment can be root shortening / root blunting.  If you are biting down hard on those teeth (traumatic occlusion) there can also be changes in the length and shape of the root.  I would have your orthodontist monitor for this and check your occlusion (your bite).  Good luck!

If a bite is "off" or imbalanced, then the roots can shorten.  If TOO short, they can become loose and come out.  Many people have "shorter than normal" roots with no problems, but you should be analyzed by a dentist that understands bite issues.  Steve Hill is nearby and VERY worth a visit.
