Are there any benefits in having rhinoplasty cast on longer?

I have seen different time frames for how long the cast is left on for. From 5 days to 14 days. The average seems to be 7 days so why do some doctors like to leave it on for twice as long? Does it benefit the patients healing or give better results?

You are correct that some surgeons leave the splint on longer than others. This may reduce thdd Ed amount of swelling slightly. Personally I don’t see much benefit to it. Once you choose your surgeon you should leave the splint in for the time recommended by your surgeon.

You are correct, on average cast is removed about 7 days after surgery. If nasal bone is not fractured or remains very stable, the cast can be removed by day 5. On the other hand, if the bone is very mobile and/ or there is excessive redundant skin, cast is removed about 10 days after surgery.
Of course, there can be a day or two earlier or later based on availability of clinic appointments and this will not have any significant effect on the result.

Hi! There are so many different little nuances that each surgeon does, mostly because they find that through experience it works well in their hands. I too use splints on the outside for 7 days, which does appear to be the average length of time. For me, one week is also a good time to remove sutures if it’s an open approach and it seems to help decrease swelling and support the nose long enough to heal at a level that doesn’t need as much protection. I sometimes keep it on longer if I feel that swelling is more than usual at post op day 7. The splint mostly though serves as a reminder to the patient to be careful and not bump or rub the nose.
