Is Tranexamic Acid safe to take when having sclerotherapy for spider veins?

I take Transexamic Acid for heavy periods which will start on Monday. On Monday I am also due for a session of sclerotherapy in the spider veins on my legs. Is it safe to continue with the Transexamic Acid?

Tranexamic acid is called an antifibrinologic agent and is used to decrease bleeding particularly in trauma patients. Since it can decrease bleeding, it potentially also carries the risk of increasing clotting.  I would not recommend taking this while having sclerotherapy.

Thank you for posting your question.Data from the British General Practice Research Database has shown that women taking tranexamic acid had a 3-fold higher risk of developing deep vein thrombosis.It is a drug taken to reduce menorrhagia or hematuria, etc. Tranexamic acid is antifibrinolytic, meaning that it stops the breakdown of blood clots that form in the body. As such, I recommend that you avoid or perhaps delay sclerotherapy until you are off this drug.Discuss it with your doctor when you get to the session. make sure he/she is aware that you are on an antifibrinolytic agent.
