Trouble Urinating After Breast Augmentation?

Question

After my surgery I felt that my bladder was full but I couldn't empty it. Eventually after straining, running water, massaging bladder I was able too. It's the second day and I'm still having trouble. I've urinated twice and both times took awhile and the straining hurts. Should I worry? Will this go away on its own after I heal? I am not having any other issues. Thanks!

Difficulty urinating can be caused by general anesthesia. It’s a good sign that you are still feeling when your bladder gets full, because if you didn’t that would be much more serious. If you have trouble going, don’t force it – just relax on the toilet and give it some time. Another trick is to sit in a bathtub with warm water (high enough that it covers your lower abdomen, but low enough that your upper body or incisions aren't submerged) and just urinate in the water. Then, rinse off afterward. This may sound odd but it is sterile. Then, rinse with fresh water and dry. If your compression garment gets wet, use a hairdryer to dry it. Usually, this goes away on its own but if it doesn’t or you have serious concerns about it, please speak to your surgeon.

Sometimes urination is impacted after surgery. This can be from the anesthetics and the medications given.  If it does not improve, you may need to see a urologist.

It is hard to know the exact nature of your issue, but what makes the most sense in this situation would be the use of narcotic medication or muscle relaxers. Often time this can cause urinary retention from bladder muscle spasm. This should resolve on it's own however you need to communicate this issue to your surgeon right away in case this is something more serious.

Although it is not possible to give you specific advice online, most of the time the issues you are reporting are related to the use of narcotics and/or muscle relaxants around the time of your procedure. As you wean off these medications, you should find that your bladder (and bowel) function will return to normal. However, if persistent, communicate  your concerns with your plastic surgeon sooner rather than later.

Difficulty in completely emptying of your bladder can complicate your post op course. I would not hesitate calling your plastic surgeon and bringing your concerns to light. If unavailable go to a nearby emergency room to seek relief. Don't delay

Most likely this is related to narcotics you received in surgery and in your post-op pain medicines. This would be a good time to try non-narcotics alone. If tylenol doesn't give enough pain relief, call your surgeon, who can prescribe a non-narcotic alternative.
