Minoxidil alone cannot cure baldness due to traction alopecia, although it can help if used in the early stages of the condition. The medication works by increasing the blood flow to the scalp in order to revitalize hair follicles miniaturized by DHT (the molecule responsible in male pattern balding). In traction alopecia hair follicles are torn from their roots, and proper blood flow alone cannot repair that type of permanent damage.

In general, minoxidil could help individuals with traction alopecia and steroid injections can also help. This only applies to the treatment is the 'early' stages. If the hair loss has been present for many many months ( 9 months plus) then these treatments are less effective and hair loss can sometimes be permanent. Please be aware that another condition can closely mimic traction alopecia and that is "central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia" or "CCCA"If a patient's "traction alopecia" does not improve, this other condition (i.e. CCC) needs to be considered and it might be a good idea to see a dermatologist for further advice.
