Why is my tooth still sensitive about 5 weeks after a filling?

I got my tooth filled because I had a very bad cavity. The doctor said it was a deep filling. It’s been about 5 weeks but my tooth still seems to bother me with things that are cold. Is this something I should be worried about, or is this normal when you get a deep filling?

Hi Ms. Whales,
It is not uncommon for teeth that have deep restorations to be sensitive to cold.  If the sensitivity/pain becomes spontaneous without the application of cold, notify your dentist.
Keep off the cold in the meantime as much as you can.
It sometimes takes month for the sensitivity to subside.  Give it time.  I would not be surprised if after a while the tooth will not even be sensitive to direct contact with ice.
