Do any of you Doctors know exactly why Doctors in Tijuana or Mexico cannot prescribe normal post operative medications after surgery, such as pain killers, anxiety pills ( if needed) and or a sleep aid. I do not understand that, simply giving the proper medications for comfort post surgery, it would exacerbate the healing process therefore making the patient comfortable.. Make no sense to me. Is there a law that in Mexico that does not allow them to prescribe. Thank you.
Answer: Narcotics restrictions in Mexico I want to share with you that, it is correct, believe it not, the access to all type of narcotics, you name them: painkillers, anti-anxiety, sleeping pills, and definitely IV ones, are totally restricted to our access as doctors or specialists. Only anesthesiologist or psychiatrist are allowed to have the special and very well observed prescriptions. For us is a crime to prescribe without THAT special permission. Plus you can not deny or ignore that the US has a very high problem with drug addiction mainly because doctors are allowed to prescribe narcotics as candy. I just want to tell you, that narcotics are very serious and anyone may DIE as a result of an overdose specially after a surgical procedure when your body is so weak and vulnerable. So be careful. In my practice I use pain pumps with great control over postoperative pain. Dr. Cardenas

Answer: Different countries different laws. Medical tourism. Patients that go out of the country for surgery, should be aware that many of the laws governing medicine are not the same. Additionally, the warranties on medical devices are different. For example, if you have a breast augmentation in Mexico, and the implant deflates when you come back to the United States. The warranty will not be recognized. The cost savings on the initial price of the surgery, may not be realized in the long run.Yours, Jon M. Grazer, MD, MPH, FACS

Answer: Why cannot reputable surgeons in Mexico or Tijuana prescribe medication after surgery? There are different regulations and policies for many countries. I would search for the board certified plastic surgeon who you feel is most likely to give you the best results and who performs hundreds of these procedures each year. I would look at patient reviews as well as before and after photos on that surgeon's website.Kenneth Hughes, MDLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Why cannot reputable surgeons in Mexico or Tijuana prescribe medication after surgery? It looks as though you are writing from California, so the issue is probably that their license is not valid in California. I'm sure they could prescribe you drugs to be filled in Mexico, but your question highlights one of the many reasons that medical tourism is not a good idea. If you want to have a safe procedure and be able to fill your prescriptions locally then get a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon near you.
