What can I expect during a Kybella appointment?

Kybella represents and exciting advance in the nonsurgical treatment of submental (beneath the chin)  fullness secondary to the presence of a large volume of subcutaneous fat.  Our practice is one of a handful in Los Angeles that have been selected by the manufacturer of Kybella to perform the initial  treatments with this new product as it is being introduced to the general public.During your initial appointment for a Kybella consultation at Wave, you will meet with a consultant to determine if treatment with Kybella will meet your aesthetic goals, and if you are a candidate for such a treatment. If the answer to these questions is yes, you will be seen by one of our surgeons, who will do a thorough history and physical examination, and discuss with you all of the different considerations that relate to treatment with Kybella, including the schedule of injections, since Kybella is usually not a single injection treatment.  The treatment itself is remarkably quick and easy to do, and recovery and downtime is minimal. This makes it one of the most exciting new options for patients looking to improve the appearance of their neck, chin and jawline without resorting to surgery.

Kybella is an amazing
injection to dissolve the fat under the chin. The number of treatments
depends on the individual fat under the chin and how many units of Kybella are
injected. The average series of injections of Kybella is two to four
injections. You need to wait 6 to 8 weeks in between injections.A skillfully trained provider will determine how much is needed to treat the designated area. What to expect during a Kybella treatmentThe BioSpa Newport Beach provides complimentary consultations to determine if individuals are a candidate for Kybella. If so, a treatment plan will be determined and explained. Each patient is different, so the number of injections and total number of treatments will vary. The FDA states patients may receive up to 50 injections in a single treatment, with up to six single treatments administered no less than one month apart. The initial thought is that patients with moderate double chin fat will require approximately 15-20 injections in a single treatment, with a total of 2-3 treatments. The Kybella treatment is performed at our BioSpa by Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach as a non-surgical treatment. Kybella is administered as an injection into the fat tissue in the submental area (under chin). Multiple injections are required with each treatment. Total treatment time will take about 20 minutes. There may be some mild discomfort during the injections. Prior to treatment, ice can be used to numb the area or a topical numbing cream is another alternative we have available. Generally with all consultations, I generally listen to your concern, do an assessment, and develop different options for you.  As a plastic surgeon who also specializes in many of the non-invasive options out there, I tend to spend a lot of time discussing the pros/cons of each option.  Kybella is a great non-invasive way to treat the submental fatpad (double chin), but there are other options including liposuction and a neck lift.  I would recommend that you visit with a plastic surgeon who offers various options so you can determine what is best for you. If you decide you are open to Kybella, then the procedure can be usually be done on the same day.  The procedure takes ~20 min and is very well tolerated.  Although you may start to see changes with even one treatment, you may want to consider 2-4 treatments before you start to notice a much bigger change.

Kybella is FDA approved for the fullness beneath the chin. It can reduce the fat by multiple injections. Only local anesthestic is needed and you can expect mild to moderate swelling and redness. It has to be injected 5 weeks apart and for 3-6 sessions. 

You consultation will involve an assessment of your anatomy and an explanation of the risks, benefits, and alternatives to kybella treatment. If you decide to proceed, the treatment area will be cleaned, numbed and the injection plan will be marked. You will have a series of small injections to evenly treat the desired area. You can expect some bruising, numbness or discomfort in the area which may take a week to fully resolve.

At your Kybella consultation your chin and neck area will be evaluated to determine if you are an appropriate candidate. Prior to treatment with Kybella™ the submental
area will be numbed with cream and/or a small injection of local
anesthesia. Each treatment consists of
twenty to thirty tiny injections, and typically takes fifteen to twenty
minutes. Two treatment sessions, spaced six weeks apart, are required, though some patients may require up to

A Kybella treatment
can take as little as five minutes depending on the size of the areas treated.
After injection of a local anesthetic, a
series of injections are placed into the areas under the chin which need
treatment. It is important to visit an experienced, board-certified
dermatologist who has undergone Kybella training, as they will know exactly
where to place the injections for the best results. At my practice, we were
involved in Kybella clinical trials and are thus among some of the most
experienced practitioners of this new technology.

Your expectations of Kybella include receiving the first and only FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness, or "double chin." The treatment session is administered in the office in 15 to 20 minutes and is customized to achieve your treatment goals by destroying the fat cells beneath your chin. The most common side effects after treatment are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness in the treatment area.

You can expect your doctor to go over the risks, benefits, alternatives, and costs of the Kybella procedure with you during your appointment.  If you are a candidate, your doctor will tell you how many treatments to expect for complete correction of your neck area.

Your appointment would involve an assessment of your skin tone and fat thickness under the chin. If you are a good candidate then your first treatment may be done the same day. Keep in mind however that there will be swelling for up to several days and that 2-4 treatment session may be required, 4-6 weeks apart.
