Kybella Is An Exciting New Option For Nonsurgical Treatment of The Neck

Kybella represents and exciting advance in the nonsurgical treatment of submental (beneath the chin)  fullness secondary to the presence of a large volume of subcutaneous fat.  Our practice is one of a handful in Los Angeles that have been selected by the manufacturer of Kybella to perform the initial  treatments with this new product as it is being introduced to the general public.

During your initial appointment for a Kybella consultation at Wave, you will meet with a consultant to determine if treatment with Kybella will meet your aesthetic goals, and if you are a candidate for such a treatment. If the answer to these questions is yes, you will be seen by one of our surgeons, who will do a thorough history and physical examination, and discuss with you all of the different considerations that relate to treatment with Kybella, including the schedule of injections, since Kybella is usually not a single injection treatment.

The treatment itself is remarkably quick and easy to do, and recovery and downtime is minimal. This makes it one of the most exciting new options for patients looking to improve the appearance of their neck, chin and jawline without resorting to surgery.

Treating Double Chin with Kybella Injections

Kybella is an amazing injection to dissolve the fat under the chin. The number of treatments depends on the individual fat under the chin and how many units of Kybella are injected. The average series of injections of Kybella is two to four injections. You need to wait 6 to 8 weeks in between injections.

A skillfully trained provider will determine how much is needed to treat the designated area. We typically apply a topical numbing cream as well as inject with Lidocaine to ensure that the treatment will be comfortable and virtually painless.  After the treatment, we suggest anti-inflammatory remedies and ice for comfort and swelling reduction.

Kybella and Expectations

Kybella is a fabulous treatment to remove the submental fat - better known as the "double chin".  We apply a topical numbing for 30 minutes and then locally inject the patient to make the Kybella injection comfortable.  After I mark the patient's anatomy and the area of injection with a template, I meticulously inject the Kybella into the treated area. We ice the patients and follow-up with all patients in several weeks.  We have had fantastic results with Kybella.  Best, Dr. Green

Kybella Treatment Experience

I will usually see a patient in consultation before the scheduled treatment session in order to obtain a careful medical history and to thoroughly examine the patient's facial and neck anatomy to determine if they are a candidate for treatment with Kybella or whether they may be better served by Tumescent Liposculpture, or skin tightening procedures such as Ultherapy or a Face/Neck lift.  Some patients' fullness may be due to enlarged salivary glands or other conditions and may need these medical conditions addressed first.

Once the decision to proceed with treatment by Kybella has been made and the patient arrives for treatment the following protocol is used in my Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery Practice:

The skin is cleansed with antiseptic and the neck is reexamined. The patient is given an oral prescription dose of an NSAID such as Ibuprophen (Advil ) which will help to reduce discomfort and subsequent swelling.  Markings are placed to set the borders of the desired treatment area.  Ice packs are applied to the skin to begin to make the skin less sensitive.  Local anesthetic is injected as a "field block"  to further reduce the sensation from the actual Kybella injections. After a few minutes when the anesthetic effect has been achieved Kybella solution is injected carefully into the subcutaneous fat compartment above the muscle layer and below the skin to avoid undesirable side effects. After the injections are completed the area is lightly massaged and ice packs are reapplied for a few minutes.  Markings are removed and the patient is discharged until their next injection appointment 4 to 8 weeks later.

With this approach we have had no complications, no pain during treatment and reduced swelling following the treatment.

What to Expect During a Kybella Treatment

What to expect during a Kybella treatmentThe BioSpa Newport Beach provides complimentary consultations to determine if individuals are a candidate for Kybella. If so, a treatment plan will be determined and explained. Each patient is different, so the number of injections and total number of treatments will vary. The FDA states patients may receive up to 50 injections in a single treatment, with up to six single treatments administered no less than one month apart. The initial thought is that patients with moderate double chin fat will require approximately 15-20 injections in a single treatment, with a total of 2-3 treatments. The Kybella treatment is performed at our BioSpa by Pacific Center for Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach as a non-surgical treatment. Kybella is administered as an injection into the fat tissue in the submental area (under chin). Multiple injections are required with each treatment. Total treatment time will take about 20 minutes. There may be some mild discomfort during the injections. Prior to treatment, ice can be used to numb the area or a topical numbing cream is another alternative we have available. This will be discussed during your consultation.

What to expect During a Kybella Visit

Your first Kybella visit will include an evaluation to determine if you have subcutaneous fat under your chin which can be treated, and an interview to determine if you have any contraindications to treatment.  Your physician will also review the risks and benefits of treatments.

Prior to the Kybella procedure patients can sit with a topical numbing cream for 30 minutes.  During the treatment the target area will be marked with a pencil and a temporary "tattoo" grid will be placed.  (This is easily removed after treatment.)  The area is then injected with numbing medicine, and then with Kybella.  The treated area usually starts turning red and swelling within about 15 minutes.  Most patients will have temporary side effects of redness, swelling, and tenderness for about 4-5 days.  Occasionally this will last longer.  Treatment is repeated about 6-8 weeks later.  Most patients need 2-4 treatments.

What to expect with Kybella

During your consultation, your physician will discuss your expectations and whether this is the ideal procedure for you. If you decide to proceed, the physician will first clean and mark out the treatment site then numb the area using lidocaine injections. The medication will then be injected in a grid pattern evenly over the chin. The entire procedure should take less than 30 minutes. Side effects including swelling, discomfort, numbness, redness and bruising should resolve within a week.

What to expect during a Kybella appointment

Generally with all consultations, I generally listen to your concern, do an assessment, and develop different options for you.  As a plastic surgeon who also specializes in many of the non-invasive options out there, I tend to spend a lot of time discussing the pros/cons of each option.  Kybella is a great non-invasive way to treat the submental fatpad (double chin), but there are other options including liposuction and a neck lift.  I would recommend that you visit with a plastic surgeon who offers various options so you can determine what is best for you.

If you decide you are open to Kybella, then the procedure can be usually be done on the same day.  The procedure takes ~20 min and is very well tolerated.  Although you may start to see changes with even one treatment, you may want to consider 2-4 treatments before you start to notice a much bigger change.

Kybella is FDA approved for the fullness beneath the chin. It can reduce the fat by multiple injections. Only local anesthestic is needed and you can expect mild to moderate swelling and redness. It has to be injected 5 weeks apart and for 3-6 sessions.

Kybella Treatment

Thank you for your question. Kybella has been recently FDA-approved for the treatment of submental fullness and is the only non-invasive treatment for the reduction of “double chins”. Kybella will permanently destroy fat cells in the targeted area as well as offering limited skin tightening to the treated area administered by a series of injections. Other benefits include:

Minimally invasive
No downtime
Better appearance, youthful look
No surgery
No general anesthesia
Very rare and minimal side effects (typically bruising, pain, and redness at the injection points)

I suggest consulting with a qualified physician for a full consultation.
