Can I donate my breast tissue?

Question

Im a transgender man and I've been considering getting top surgery for a long time now when I can eventually afford it. I was wondering if, instead of just discarding it, I can ask the doctors to donate my breast tissue to cancer patients or possibly trans women/fem nb people so that they could make some good use of it.

Hello,While a very kind gesture, breast tissue cannot be donate to another individual as their body would reject the tissue.  Breast tissue is organ tissue and much like any other organ if such a donation was possible lifelong immunosuppression would be required to prevent rejection of the tissue.Best of Luck with your Top Surgery!Dr. Rednam

Hi,Thanks for the post. Though it is a selfless idea, medically it is not possible to donate your tissue to someone else because their body would reject it as foreign. In order to prevent this rejection, they would have to go on anti-rejection medications that have significant side effects.Sincerely,Dr. Dadvand

Unfortunately your breast tissue cannot be donated to another person. However you can make some use of the tissue that is removed. The fatty tissue can be prepared and replaced as fat grafts to enhance the size or shape of your muscles. Your surgeon must be careful to only use fat tissue because grafted breast tissue could later cause problems with cancer detection.

Hello, Its a noble thought indeed. But Breast tissue cannot be transplanted to another person like other organ transplant as the risk involved with immuno suppression drugs to maintain it would outweigh the benefits.
