Screw Silicone Jaw Implants or Not?

The pocket is usually made under a thin but strong membrane called the periosteum with the pocket made to the exact size. The pocket then shrinks down around the implant to hold if firmly in place and it will feel just like your chin - you will not be able to wiggle it.A a screw is not usually used for silicone implants (the most common type) but is used for others such as PTFE, Gortex, Medpor, etc.

It is generally a good idea to secure silicone jaw angle implants with screw fixation. Because they have a smooth surface they have a notorious tendency to slide from the intended position and migrate towards the intraoral incision through which they are placed.

Generally, I place 2 screws to keep silicone jaw implants in place to avoid inadvertent movement of the implants; however, every surgeon is different.  Please discuss with your board certified surgeon so that the results you seek can be achieved.

 I have done many cases of cheek and chin implants over the past 25 years.  I do not use jaw implants due to their higher incidence of issues after placement.  One of these is the movement of the implants, even when they are screwed in...which is a must, due to the Masseter muscle that moves every time you open and close the mouth.  In contrast, cheek or chin implants do not need to be screwed in place.
