Is Restylane Contour FDA approved for use in lips?

I recently got new lip filler. I requested restylane kysse that I had in the past, my injector insisted restylane contour was better and I should try it. My lips look great! But I am reading Contour is only FDA approved to go in cheeks… did my nurse do something wrong? Should I be worried?

Hi there, thank you for your question.Most HA fillers have only been approved for use in specific regions (usually midface for volumizing cheeks and/or lower face for perioral folds). I believe that Kysse may be the first/only filler that is FDA approved specifically for lips at this time &mdash; it was approved in May 2020, so for the 20+ years prior to Kysse, fillers that were injected into the lips were also considered “off-label use”. Therefore, using Contour in the lips, while technically an “off-label use”, doesn’t mean that isn’t a great filler for that area. Your injector did nothing out of the ordinary and if it looks great then you have nothing to worry about. I always recommend consulting with an experienced injector and allowing them to determine which filler to use that will suit your individual needs best. Best of luck!

Restylane Contour is not FDA-approved for lip treatment, however its physical properties make it an appropriate choice for lips. Many many aesthetic treatments are done "off-label", meaning the use has not specifically been approved by the FDA. FDA approval processes require a lot of money and time, therefore companies don't always seek approval for every indication. Your nurse did not do anything wrong. Medically trained providers are permitted by the FDA to use drugs in off-label ways if they deem it appropriate.
