Will the whitening process be compromised on the areas that aren't covered by the trays?

I went today to pick up my teeth whitening trays. When I got home I realized the top tray doesn't fully cover the two front teeth by a significant amount. The dental assistant checked them before I walked out and didn't notice a problem. Does this matter?

Thank you for your inquiry.  Yes, your whitening trays should completely cover your teeth for an even whitening.  Also, this will effectively seal your teeth so whitening gel does not irritate your gums. You should definitely speak with your treating dentist and it should be a simple fix to make you new trays.  Also, make sure they're fitting properly, as if they are not seated all the way down then this could make your tray not completely cover your teeth as well. I would contact yours entity's office and bring this up to them.  The trays should cover the entire tooth and extend up to cover a portion of the gum tissue as well to give a proper seal so there is not whitening gel leaking out.  As long as you or your dentist still have the models/casts this should take very little time to remake them.
