Lip filler reaction/migration? (Photo)

Question

I had RHA2 injected into my lips 2 years ago and about 3 months ago I woke up with my wet/dry border lumpy and irritated. The redness went away after a couple of days, but the lumps remain. The redness and irritation is back again and it’s really annoying, could it be a late onset reaction?

As your filler treatment was two years ago the symptoms you are describing could be unrelated.  It may be irritation from something that you ate or an allergy.  Visit with your primary care physician if symptoms continue.

Thanks for your question. We do sometimes see late onset reactions in regions where dermal filler has been placed. However, the RHA brand of dermal fillers is the LEAST LIKELY to cause this reaction because their cross linking looks most like your body's natural HA cross linking. Two years out we would certainly expect the RHA 2 to have dissolved away already. So, it makes more sense to look for other causes of the symptoms first. I see a few white spots on your photo- these are likely Fordyce spots. These harmless, tiny (1 to 2 millimeter) white bumps inside the lips are visible sebaceous, or oil-producing, glands.  I hope that helps.
