I had a root canal 13 years ago, and found out that it failed and now has a "large infection". Unfortunately I don't have the imaging. The dentist recommended extraction, including a bone graft and bridge or implant. Should I pay to get a 2nd opinion, (possible 2nd root canal, or apicoectomy?) or is extraction the only option since the infection is large? I'm only 32 and prefer to keep my natural tooth if possible!

Something is wrong here. If your dentist cannot offer a sensible explanation and assurance that this will not happen again, then get a second opinion. I do not understand why this is happening. Did you get a rock bottom price on your care?
If teeth were present at the time implants were placed, we usually can't get "primary closure" of the tissues (gums stitched tightly/touching). If primary closure was a goal, then the teeth would be extracted and the area allowed to heal for 2-3 weeks and THEN implants placed. It sounds like y...
