Are Saline Implants Perkier then Silicone?

Question

I have read that saline implants have a more round and perky look then silicone. Is this true? Or can you achieve a round perky look with silicone as well? Also, do silicone implants cause your breasts to sag faster because they are heavier than saline?

Both saline and silicone implants are FDA approved. Saline implants work well on patients placed subpectorally in patients that have adequate breast tissue and preferentially have not had children. In most cases, they look and feel very similar to silicone gel implants. Silicone gel implants are better in patients that have no breast tissue although the incision is a little longer. Neither implant will cause sagging more than the other. If one has large implants greater than 350cc’s then they tend to sag with both saline and silicone implants.

Saline implants do not have a perkier appearance than do silicone. The size of the implant, amount of breast tissue you have, and skin laxity will all play a role in the final appearance of your breasts.

	Thank you for your question.

	It is not true that saline necessarily gives a perkier look than silicone. It depends on fill and dimensions. A form stable cohesive silicone gel implant with the right shape for you can achieve 'perkiness'.

	Silicone implants do weigh more than saline by a fraction. For the same volume, every 1gram of saline is about 1.03gram of silicone. This is so slight that their weight variance will not factor in your outcome or affect sagging differently.

In general if you put a 400 cc saline implant next to a 400 cc silicone implant with the same profile, saline will always project more. Now, your question is more complex than that answer because now you add in that everyone has a different amount of breast tissue, different quality of skin and a multitude of other variants that affect breast shape and you can get a great result with either implant depending on your particular breast type.

Breast augmentation should be exactly that, augmenting the appearance of a natural breast and not enlarging it without consideration for correct form and symmetry.

	Saline implants whether over filled or under filled only enlarge a breast. If you want longer lasting and a more predictable results you can't go wrong with form stable cohesive implants.

Saline implants are rounder and firmer than gel implants. However when placed under the muscle there is not a large difference. It is also dependent on how much breast tissue there is to cover the implant. The more the tissue the less the difference. A 300cc saline implant weighs the same as a 300cc gel implant.

For many sizes of salines, the implants if filled toward the high end of the suggested volume will have projection similar to the next higher profile of silicone, and int that regard may seem perkier. But the same can be accomplished using the next higher profile of silicone implants, and then you have the shape you may want, but also the benefits of more natural feeling silicone.

	The weights of silicone and saline are quite similar, with the silicone slightly lighter.

many feel saline implants may look perkier or rounder than silicone gel implants. However, the shape is not entirely predictable. The final look, "like half grapefruits or tear-drop shaped" depends on how your body heals the implants in place, the size and style of the implant, the amount and shape of your breast tissue and chest dimensions.
