How long post Accutane for side effects to go away?

Question

I'm in my 3rd month (of five) of Accutane treatment. So far, I'm pleased with the results, but I am dealing with typical side effects like dry skin/lips and joint pain. My question is, how long will those side effects last once I've completed treatment?

It’s great your skin is responding well to Isotretinoin therapy.  The dryness is a temporary challenge for most patients on Isotretinoin and will slowly improve when you complete full treatment.  It is imperative to stay well hydrated, avoid sun, use gentle cleansers and moisturizers/lip balm to protect and repair your skin. It is important to be under the supervision of a board certified dermatologist.

In some patients, the side effects lessen in the first few months of treatment however in others, they can last the duration of treatment. Typically the side effects will subside once the medication is discontinued. However it can take up to 6 months for your skin to return to its new “normal”. I do not recommend any laser treatments or cosmetic surgeries until at least 6 months post accutane. If the side effects are affecting your daily activities, you should discuss with your dermatology provider as they may consider lowering your dose.
