6 weeks post op breast reduction. Is it normal to experience a delay in the first menstrual cycle after surgery?

I am 6 weeks post op on my breast reduction. I still have not had my first menstrual cycle post op and am starting to become concerned. My hormones have been all over the place the last 2 weeks so I keep thinking its right around the corner but I have no other of my normal symptoms. My last cycle ended about 5 days before surgery. Is this normal??

Thank you for your question. Everyone’s body reacts differently to surgery, so it is not uncommon for your menstrual cycle to be a bit off following your procedure. Keep in mind that your body has undergone trauma, and is putting energy towards healing, so that could be the cause of a disrupted cycle. If irregularity persists, I recommend that you see your doctor to make sure that nothing else is going on with your health. Good luck!

Yes! Any type of surgical procedure could cause changes to your menstrual cycle, with the stress of surgery as well as anesthesia often being common factors. If this persists for more than a few months or if you notice any other gynecologic changes, let your gynecologist know. Best wishes!
