Will taking 5HTP for depression cause hair loss?

Question

I’ve tried SSRI’s for anxiety/depression in the past, and have experienced unfavorable side effects (hair loss, etc). I heard that 5 HTP is effective is treating both depression and anxiety, but I’m worried that it will also cause hair loss. Any advice?

In my opinion, there have been no reported side effects from 5-HTP that relate to hair loss. If you are concerned about hair loss, find a hair loss expert who will do a good history, examination and possibly blood work.PRPHAIRMD.COM

There are no side effects listed for 5 HTP with increased hair loss. I suggest seeing a hair loss expert now to evaluate and go over your condition and test results and provide you information about your best treatment options. There are great non-invasive options like prp/progesterone and/or hair transplantation. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Many anti-depression medications cause hair loss. I am not particularly familiar with this one, but ask your prescribing doctor about this side effect
