Concentrated PRP is very acidic in nature and has a warm, 'stinging' feeling for about 5-10 minutes post-injection. Injections in the scalp overall are not favorable, so applying a local anesthetic is recommended. We typically apply lidocaine 2% to the scalp with a dental syringe, which isn't too harsh for an injection needle. Some of my patients have done PRP without local numbing and they do fine. Our office also offers nitrous gas for relaxation and numbing as well. Best, Dr. Anil Shah
PRP injections using the subdermal depot injection technique and a 30 or 32 gauge needle are not uncomfortable. If you are afraid of needles or highly sensitive to pain, nitrous oxide and oxygen analgesia (Pronox) can be added. General anesthesia is not used because of the risks. The treatment protocol that is presently validated includes three to four monthly injections followed by a maintenance phase of 2 to 4 times a year. find a PRP expert. PRP treatment is not as painful or inflammatory, treatment is effective if done for every 2 months six times a year for more effective results.
PRP hair treatment does not require general anesthesia. I use a topical numbing cream and ice which significantly reduces discomfort.
An experienced provider can generally provide a relatively painless PRP hair loss procedure with simple local anesthetic. There are no set protocols for maintenance. Generally, a single maintenance treatment every 6 - 12 months works well for most patients. Hope I have helped.Warmly,Arbella Sarkis, MD
