Chewing pain week after temporary crown. Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear that your temporary is giving you trouble.  Often when the bite is not exactly even can caused pain on persistent chewing. Please visit your dentist and he/she can simply check to make sure that the bite is even and adjust it if necessary. Delay of adjustment can cause more persistent pain which may take longer to go away.All the best,

The best thing for you to do is to call the dentist who did your crown and ask them to see you, and describe your symptoms.  Most dentists will want to make sure you are comfortable in your temporary and it is usually an easy fix.  The most probable reason for your discomfort is that the temporary hits the opposing tooth prematurely or in a manner that is different than what you are used to.  Most people start to notice discomfort after a couple of days because it takes a little time for the ligament around the tooth to bruise and create an inflammatory response which then causes pain.  Think of it like a charlie horse.  If someone were to hit you, even lightly, on your arm it might not hurt at first, but after several hundred times, the area would be sensitive even to the lightest touch.  The likelihood of you needing a root canal at this point is not great, but with continued trauma the risk goes up.  Thanks for your question.  Best of luck.Dr. Christian Yaste

Do not wait for your next visit. See your dentist immediately to see if the bite is high so it can be adjusted. If that is the case, have it adjusted and then chew on the opposite side for a while to allow the area to calm down. May still need a root canal in the future.
