Answer: How the Body Metabolizes Dead Fat Cells CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis, which is the non-invasive cooling of fat cells to induce lipolysis without damage to other tissues or structures. Precise cooling provides safety by only affecting fat cells while sparing skin, nerves and muscle. Once the cells have been frozen, they undergo apoptosis, also known as programed cell death; the biological process responsible for the death of adipocytes. The fat cells die in the first two to three days by apoptosis and begin to collapse. Macrophages from the body digest and consume the dead fat cells and lipids within the cells. The dead fat cells and their contents are cleared through the lymphatic system. The body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells. For weeks and months to follow, patient will experience reduction in the layer of fat cells. Patients will start noticing results at around 3 weeks, however the most dramatic results can be seen from 1-3 months. Some common side effect will be redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, sensitivity and tingling. Numbness can persist up to several weeks.
