Are veneers "tried on" while numb?

Question

I'm having my top veneers replaced (6 veneers, 2 crowns) and am currently in temps. Is anesthetic used when trying on the real ones? Novocaine used on my front teeth make my lips and face swell a lot, and I'm concerned that I won't be able to tell if the veneers feel and fit correctly (especially my bite) before giving the ok to have them permanently cemented. Related question: Can something be used other than Novocaine? (not nitrous oxide.) Thanks!

If you're teeth weren't prepped much and you don't have sensitivity on those teeth, you can forego the anesthesia if you'd like. When I deliver crowns or veneers, I don't use anesthesia if the patient is comfortable enough without it because I want to get the bite correct and make sure everything feels normal. If you do need to be anesthetized, maybe your doctor can temporarily cement the veneers so you can try them out for a couple of days before permanently cementing.

You might be able to try them on without anesthesia, but it depends on how sensitive your teeth are. If anesthesia is used the veneers can be cemented with temporary cement.
