Thank you for you question. Shortness of breath following a surgical procedure can be a sign of a pulmonary embolism and should be evaluated ASAP. I recommend you follow up with your plastic surgeon. Best of luck.
Shortness of breath after any surgical procedure can be a symptom of pulmonary embolism. These occur when blood in the large veins of the legs clot, break off, and travel up the veins to the heart which pumps the clots into the lungs. This is a medical emergency requiring quick evaluation and treatment. It sounds like your shortness of breath is with activity which can be seen with breast augmentation. If your breathing worsens with activity, or starts happening without activity, you should be taken to an ER immediately. In any case, you should call your plastic surgeon with these symptoms.
In my experience, it takes about 3 to 5 weeks to get accustomed to your breasts after surgery, and before they start to feel like they are part of you. When concerned, always a good idea to check in with your surgeon.Dr. Ted Eisenberg, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and Author
Shortness of breath is something that is common immediately after surgery, but you should be back to full lung function at this point. I strongly recommend seeing your plastic surgeon immediately, as shortness of breath can be a sign of a serious medical issue such as pneumonia or a blood clotting issue that needs to be addressed promptlyAnthony P. Hello and thank you for your question. I am assuming you had a breast augmentation. Patient's do find it more difficult to take a deep breath initially after surgery due to the weight/pressure of the implants as well as the pec muscle being involved. It's still important to let your PS know due to possible pulmonary embolism.
What you are experiencing may or may not be "normal". Postoperative respiratory complaints may indicate a serious problem; potential problems such as pneumonia or pulmonary embolism may need to be ruled out. Best wishes.
Shortness of breath after surgery can be due to discomfort with chest expansion - especially after breast augmentation. We sometimes give patients incentive spirometers to help facilitate deep breathing. However, ANY shortness of breath need to be evaluated by your plastic surgeon. If it is persistent or worsening, then you need to go to the Emergency Department, ASAP!
Shortness of breath is not common after breast augmentation surgery. Follow up with your plastic surgeon for an exam.
