Uncomfortable and Thick Retainers

Question

I had braces around 5 years ago & wore my retainers like they said until I took a trip in 2017 where I stopped. When I put them back on they didn't fit great but they still fit enough that I didn’t feel like they were a problem. I then noticed my retainers had cracked. So I went to get new ones and they made them thicker so I can't crack them. They are EXTREMELY uncomfortable for me to wear now. There's a gap between the roof of my mouth and the plastic & the plastic cuts into my tongue on the bottom

It sounds like you need new retainers that fit you better. There should not be a gap between the plastic and roof of your mouth. It certainly should not cut into your tongue. I would recommend going back to the orthodontist who made your retainer to have them take a look. Another thing to consider is having it remade in the thinner material. Yes, you do give up some durability but what good is a durable retainer that you'll never wear? In my practice, we give every patient 2 sets of retainers. This may be a better route for you to purchase an extra set of retainers for use after the first one is worn out.

you can stop using those retainers as it may not fit. it is advisable to get a new retainer made, as this may cause pain, hurt and sometimes cut on your cheeks and gums
