Is photodynamic therapy suitable for darker skin types?

I have type V skin. I have been on tretinoin 0.1% for 3 weeks and my acne is clearing up but I still have red inflamed acne marks. Will PDT help with acne, acne marks (redness and hyperpigmentation) and acne scarring (shallow pitted scars)?

Thanks for your
question and we have treated all skin types with PDT and the blue light source
for acne. We can definitely use it to improve the acne, but any scarring on the
skin will probably not be affected by having PDT performed. We like to have our
patients maximize medical therapy first before embarking on PDT – and from your
description, you need more medicines first. Consult with a board-certified
dermatologist to learn more about maximizing your acne therapy.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is not typically used to treat darker skin. PDT can help with acne, but typically is not as effective in treating acne scars.
