Painful, hard belly button after umbilical hernia repair, no mesh, lipoma - did my surgeon put permanent stitches in my navel?

I had umbilical hernia repair 12 days ago, bandages are off, and dissolvable stitches are still in my belly button but now I realize my surgeon put sutures inside my belly button, under the skin. It's very painful. I'm a stomach sleeper and the pinching & squeezing of the sutures is uncomfortable. My navel skin is tight/red. No other swelling or hardness but my belly button is hard, thick & pink. I realize this might be residual swelling but this is being full, activity, and sleeping painful.
