I'm 17 and have an underbite and Its come to the point where I can barely chew my food with my front teeth because they don't come down together. I heard about head gear but that's just debillating to my self-esteem. I think my bite is severe, being that it's preventing me from chewing properly. My smile is also not appealing. I want to fix it, but I don't want people seeing me with a contraption attached to my head, looking like Jimmy from Ed Edd and Eddy.

Unfortunately, from your photos you likely need jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) to fully correct your bite.  With the extent of crowding that you seem to have in your lower arch your underbite will get worse once the teeth are straightened and you will really need jaw surgery to get the upper and lower teeth in the correct relationship.  There are some orthodontists doing jaw surgery cases with Invisalign but you still need jaw surgery at some point.  I don't think a facemask (contraption attached to your head) would be effective at your age anyway so you don't have to worry about getting one of those.  Best route would be braces and jaw surgery.

Looking at your teeth and bite, head gear would not help. You would benefit from braces. Orthoganthic surgery is a possibility in your case. Find a good and experienced orthodontist for a consultation
