I had hernia repair surgery on a small hernia which I always thought was just an outie and I had a general surgeon do a hernia repair and he also removed excess skin from the top . I had no mesh put in . It almost looks like my belly button was just flipped inside out and still sticking up. The top of it is very hard where the stitches are ... i really thought it would look like an innie and I'm really upset and want to know if it just needs time to soften up and go in?! Thanks !!!!

There is risk of strangulation with hernias, this is why repair of symptomatic hernias are recommended. however, having a hernia isn't something that should prevent you from flying home, and taking care of the hernia at home. if you had your repair outside the country, consider follow up issues...
Bruising is very common in the first week or two following surgery. However, I would recommend following up closely with the surgeon that performed the umbilical hernia repair in this early postoperative period to evaluate for any potential complications.Ziyad Hammoudeh, MD
