(NYC area) I have been told by multiple doctors that the fullness underneath my jaw is due to my submandibular glands, and the only way to achieve the results I am looking for is excision. I am very nervous about undergoing such an invasive procedure and I've read about botox as a potential solution. However, it seems not many people offer this treatment. Is it effective?
Answer: Botox for enlarged SM glands treatment We do not have many reports about Botox's effect on salivary glands, submandibular glands included. The recent report about Botox use to reduce parotid gland hypertrophy has shown about 10-12% percent volume reduction after several weeks. Repeated injections may be needed to keep glands under control; however, long-term results are missing. Considering that 12-15 units of Botox to each SM gland is not very expensive you may consider doing that to avoid surgical reduction. I hope this helps you.

Answer: A Robust HA Filler Can Help To Define, Tighten & Define The Jawline (And Diminish Submental Fullness) Without at least photos, particularly in profile view of the jawline and neck, I can only comment in very general terms. Many cases of submandibular fullness arise from volume loss in the cheeks above the jawline and/or lack of volume and adequate chin projection--both of which can give rise to a jowly jawline and the appearance of submandibular fullness. Before jumping into the expense, discomfort and downtime of invasive, aggressive surgery, you might be wise to consult with an experienced, board certified cosmetic dermatologist filler expert to see whether the simple, but expert use of an appropriate HA volumizing and/or lifting filler for the jawline and/or chin can serve to minimize the submandibular fullness. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Answer: Botox may not decrease the size of your salivary glands. It is true that Botox injections can decrease saliva production, however, I do not think that this would lead to a significant decrease in the size of your submandibular salivary glands. Trying this however certainly should not be without much risk. Wishing you well. Sincerely, Dr Joseph

Answer: Decreasing the size of the submandibular gland Using Botox in the submandibular gland will reduce the production of saliva and mildly reduced the size of the gland. If the gland is very large, and the suspensory ligaments are stretched, excision may be the only option. Everything depends on the size of the gland, as well as the result you wish to achieve. I hope this helps and good luck from New York City Plastic Surgery.
