My eyes used to be very wide-set when I was a child, but now the distance between the eyes is almost equal to the length of the eye. Any explanation for this?

Your eyelids look normal, and the degree of asymmetry is mild and very much within one normal standard deviation.
I don’t see a clear indication for surgical intervention, and would recommend avoiding surgery at this point.
