Question

I had radiation treatment on my eye when I was 3. Eye was removed at age 4 and it is now a prosthetic. I’m 29 now. Multiple reconstructive surgeries since. 2 cheek implants have been rejected by my body. The hydroxyapatite I do have, swells, and is extremely painful daily. It gets infected off and on. I’m ready to look and feel normal. What is recommended?

the best option is to optimize your tissue -- RF treatments -- and use grafting with fat + PRP + Acell + scuptra and/or matrix cells like Renuva fat.  Nothing will ever be perfect.  Best, Dr. Emer.

With the tissue loss you have around the eye and cheek and also having the tissues previously irradiated, no implant should ever be placed in this very abnormal tissue bed...it is prone to complications and eventual removal. The best long-term strategy is to have a vascularized free tissue transfer done to add broth better volume and quality of tissues. While not as simple as an implant, it is by far the better treatment approach that will most effectively improve your facial shape and pain.
