What is the expected recovery from mucocele removal in lower lip?

Hi. I had a mucocele removed from my left lower lip exactly 2 weeks ago. It was large and the maxiofacial surgeon said he also removed surrounding salivary glands. 2 weeks later I’m still unable to smile and have a big scab on my lip. Also inside my lip, I’ve noticed there is solid swelling where the stitches were. Is this scar tissue? Will it go down or will it be there permanently? I’m d it does go down; roughly how long should it be until I start seeing results?

Typically the mouth/lips heal fast and after most of these procedures it would unusual to have a scab present at 2 weeks.  It is tough to comment on your specific case as we don't know how large the cyst was and if your procedure was otherwise typical for this condition.  Firm tissue around the sutures is likely scar tissue, and that is normal.  It can several months, but in a typical case you can expect nearly all of that scar tissue to go away.  I would recommend you discuss your specific case and concerns with your surgeon.  Hope that helps. -Dr. Rolfes
