Hyperpigmentation or dark spots can be improved with a combination of lasers, Aerolase, microneedling/prp, skin lightening, peels, and skin care. Sun protection is essential. See an expert. Thanks for your question.  A picture would have helped.  IPL is not safe for everyone.  Patients have to be carefully screened for skin type and recent sun exposure.  You could be safely treated with an IPL multiple times and then come in with a little extra sun exposure that would cause you to burn.  Having olive skin, you were probably never a good candidate for IPL.The PicoSure Laser with the FOCUS & Flat Lenses are safe for all skin types and is FDA approved for pigment and scar reduction.  Your dark rectangle does sound like PIH and it may eventually fade on tis own.  The PIH and other pigment will probably respond well to FOCUS or Flat Lens treatment.  Best of luck.

Often times after an IPL treatment the pigment will get darker and more prominent as it comes to the surface. that is why we recommend as series of treatments.  Having said that it sounds like the rectangular patch is a result of perhaps too much energy applied to the area resulting in post inflammatory pigmentation.  This should eventually fade.  There are prescription creams and chemical peels that will speed up the process.  You should discuss this with your provider who can advise you.
