How Do I Get my Doctor to Give Me a Referral?

I'm 23 years old, weigh 105 lbs and 5'2. My breast size is 34DD which makes my body appear very disproportionate. It's not just the discomfort but I also have back, neck and shoulder pain and I don't even want to mention the emotional problems. I gave up ballet and every other physical activity. My doctor refuses to refer me to a plastic surgeon because he thinks breast reduction is to invasive to relieve such a "small" problem.

I don't understand your doctors philosophy. Perhaps you should consult with the plastic surgeon directly.

A doctor who presses their own opinions on their patients is doing a disservice to their patients. I suggest finding another doctor who better understands the physiology of excessively large breasts. Please realize risks do come with procedure and you need to be accepting of the risks for nipple numbness and inability to breast feed in addition to others.

If you have a non-HMO insurance plan, you don't need a referral to see a plastic surgeon.  Just call a plastic surgeon's office and make an appointment.

	Your question raises a more concerning point, though.  Your primary doctor should not be judging you for wanting to get further information about a surgical procedure.  If you are not an appropriate surgical candidate, the plastic surgeon will certainly tell you that.  Meanwhile, you might consider finding another primary physician--one who will take your concerns seriously.
