Three weeks post op - will the gap between the implants in my chest get smaller?

Hello, thanks for your question! You will notice quite a bit of change in the shape of your breasts during the first 3 months following your surgery. During this adjustment period, the swelling go down and your skin and tissue will adjust to accommodate the implants. You may notice a decreased gap between your breasts once they drop into this more natural position. After my experience with over 7000 implants, this is a common question among my patients. Dear medhelp122,I understand your concern and it is quite normal to be concerned about the outcome following a breast augmentation surgery. However, you are still in the very early stages of the healing process.Your will need to be patient at this moment and follow what your surgeon has instructed you to do post operatively.At the early stage of the healing process, the tissues around the implants are still swollen. Once the swelling subsides and the implants drop to their final position, you will be able to see the final result of your breast augmentation surgery.Daniel Barrett, MD

Thank you for sharing your question and congratulations on your augmentation!  After placement of implants, the overall appearance of the breasts will change dramatically over the next several months as the implants drop, and the overlying tissue stretches to accommodate the extra volume. You should see continued changes for up to 4-6 months after surgery, so I know waiting is difficult, but judge your results at that time.  Hope this helps.

The breast shape will continue to change for the first 3-4 months after a breast augmentation beneath the muscle. Will the gap narrow? It depends. Some surgeons place their implants initially very high and they drop a lot over these months. These patients see more dramatic changes during those healing months, and some gap narrowing can occur. Other surgeons place the implants lower, closer to the final intended position. In this case, there is less change during the healing months. I would trust your surgeon's opinion and experience with his specific technique. Hope this helps.
