How would a patient looking to get dental implants to replace missing teeth know if he needs a bone graft procedure? If someone needs a bone graft procedure, how long after the bone graft would someone have to wait to get the dental implants? After the bone grafting procedure is completed, how long would someone have to wait until the implants can be drilled into the bone or gums?
Answer: Timing of bone grafts and Implants Hi and Thank you for your question. Typically in my office since I use biologics (Plasma Rich in Growth Factors) derived from the patient owns blood the process of healing is much faster and better. The minimal time for a bone graft to heal is 3 months, obviously depending on the case. If the bone graft is into the Sinus cavity this will take approximately from 4 to 6 months of healing. If on the other hand the bone graft is a block of bone harvested from the patient it self or custom cut to fit the area buy using a 3d image , these typically can be 6 to 8 months of healing. Once the implants are placed, this typically will be ready to be restored in 3 months time. The restorative time will depend on the case, but it could be 1 month to 1 1/2 months. It is better to be evaluated earlier to have an understanding of what the pt. is looking for and the length of time that it will take. My advice, visit an office with 3D imaging (CBCT) capabilities to have a better prognosis, as well as an office that can provide all the services you need in house. In our office we are a team of Oral Surgeon and Prosthodontist and our patients get state of the art treatment since our technology is the best there can be. Good luck in your quest for a better smile!!
