Is capsular contracture dangerous?

Question

I had my breast augmentation l(over the muscle),ever since the surgery my right breast has felt very strange, it feels tight,i can feel bubbles or water and it is quite painful .I visited my surgeon 6 months after my surgery and he said the capsular constructure is normal and nothing to worry about. But is been 3 years and the pain just get worse so I'm worried, I don't want to get another surgery unless is necessary,so I'm wondering if the pain is cause for concern

A scar capsule around the implant is normal,  capsular contracture is not.   You need to see a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your options you may need this excessive tight scar tissue surgically removed.       Good Luck

It is certainly necessary for you to be examined in person.  Capsules are not at all uncommon and represent the number one reason for reoperation after breast augmentation. They are easily addressed, but may recur.  Discuss your concerns with your surgeon frankly.  If necessary seek another opinion.

Thank you for your question. You should definitely be seen in person. If you do have a capsular contracture you can have a surgery to fix it, having the surgery does not mean it will not reoccur. You need to speak with a surgeon in person and be assessed. If you are turned away again by your surgeon perhaps obtain a second opinion. Best,

Hello dear, thanks for your post. Any time a foreign object is implanted in the body, whether it is a 
pacemaker or a breast implant or an orthopedic device or anything else, 
the body responds by forming a thin, wispy, fibrous membrane around it. 
In most cases this membrane or 'capsule' stays thin and wispy, but in 
some cases over time the capsule may tighten around the implant and 
thicken, making the implant feel firm or even
 hard. In advanced stages the contracted capsule can even distort the 
shape and position of a breast implant. Capsular contracture can be 
treated, but it is a surgical treatment, so avoiding capsular 
contracture is all about avoiding another trip to the operating room.

Capsular contracture can occur on one or both sides, and while it can 
develop early (weeks) or late (years) after a breast augmentation 
surgery, in the vast majority of cases it is evident fairly early 
following the procedure.Any concern I recommend to keep a closely communication with your PS because he knows better your medical history. Good luck :)

To ease your mind a capsular contracture is not dangerous as a stand alone complication. Pain and deformity as well as hardness is reasons why people get it treated. If you have silicone breast implants you should make sure the implant is not ruptured either by study like an MRI or by surgery. The only way to treat a late stage 4 capsular contracture is breast revision surgery.Good luck!

Capsular contracture is not normal, but formation of a scar/capsule is the body's normal reaction to any implant placed anywhere in one's body. While not dangerous, you have already said it IS having an effect on your daily comfort. There is no predictable non-surgical method to correct this at this time. Usually a total capsulectomy or conversion to submuscular or other "new tissue interface" will relieve the pain and most often (but not always) the new capsule will not contract.

The capsular contracture is NOT dangerous but it is uncomfortable to painful, and distorting in the worst case.  It is not however normal.  The risk of contracture over the muscle is higher.  You might want to seek several opinions to see what can be done to improve the problem you are having.  Good luck, Dr. Schuster in Boca Raton.

My recommendation is a face to face with your surgeon to discuss options. Although CC is not "dangerous" it is obviously interfering with the outcome of your surgery. Treatment is available, and this will likely include placement of the implants behind the muscle,and likely a change of implants. You should not accept the pain without at least discussing your options.All the best.
