I just had a breast reduction on 3/26 3 days ago and was wondering how long I have to sleep propped up. Laying flat on my back doesn't hurt and being propped up is starting to hurt my neck. I haven't needed pillows under my arms either. Thank you in advanced for answers. I just want to make sure I won't cause problems or ruin results.
Answer: Sleeping on Back After Breast Reduction? Ideally being on your back and propped up for the first few days helps reduce the swelling and assists in getting up and down. However, there is no recommended sleeping position, basically you sleep in whatever position you are comfortable in and listen to your body.

CONTACT NOW Answer: Not absolutely necessary Great question. The only reason to sleep slightly elevated after breast reduction is to minimize swelling a bit faster. However, if you completely sleep on your back instead of elevated it's not a big deal. Your breasts may remain slightly more swollen when healing for a few days, but otherwise should be able to normalize quickly anyway, whether you sleep on your back flat or slightly elevated. If you are so uncomfortable with your neck pain, then it's not worthwhile to continue sleeping on your pillow. -Dr. David Mattos, New York Plastic Surgical Group

Answer: Sleeping position after breast reduction The reason we ask patients sleep propped up is because of simple logic of gravity- water flows downward, so keeping the area where you had an operation (in this case chest/breast region) will minimise the swelling afterwards thus improving your pain and helping with healing. This is probably for the first week but if it's starting to get in the way of you getting a good night's rest after a few days it's worthwhile trialling sleeping on your back. A good night's rest is also very important for your recovery! Wish you all the best in your journey. Dr Leo Kim, Specialist Plastic Surgeon in Sydney

Answer: Sleeping Position Sleeping propped up on your back will help with swelling and keep you from putting too much weight on your breasts. Unfortunatley this is difficult for side or belly sleepers. Try loweing or changing your pillows and adjusting your position. If it hurts. don't do it. All the best.

Answer: Sleeping position after Breast Reduction Hi, understand your frustration as it is uncomfortable to sleep propped up. I recommend my patients to sleep a bit upright only for 3 days then straight down on their back and after 1 month in any position they like, even on their chest.
